More About This Drink

Before jumping into what this “modern classic” Breakfast Martini cocktail recipe is all about, here are a bunch of other classic gin mixed drink recipes you'll enjoy: the Classic Gin Martini, the Tom Collins, the Singapore Sling, the Gimlet and the French 75. Now everybody put on your suit and ties and cocktail dresses and whatever other fancy clothes you have because this Breakfast Martini recipe was made by a very dapper gentleman: Salvatore Calabrese. Yeah, that’s right — Salvatore, freakin’, Calabrese. Oh, you haven't heard of him? You haven't heard of Salvatore Calabrese?! OK, we'll educate you. So who is Salvatore Calabrese? He’s an Italian bartender with a killer sense of style. Really, if you don’t believe us, check out some videos of this man on YouTube, like this one or this one. Look at those suits! How about this drink though? What inspired Calabrese to invent this Breakfast Martini recipe? Breakfast did. Kind of. According to a 2018 The Spirits Business article, Calabrese says that he created the drink when he was inspired by some marmalade and toast that he had for breakfast one day. (Apparently Calabrese doesn’t even like breakfast, but his wife encouraged him to eat it and finally he gave in one day — great job, Calabrese’s wife! We give you credit for creating this Breakfast Martini too.) In terms of flavors, The Spirits Business notes that “[Calabrese’s] signature cocktail [aims] to capture the ‘bitter and tangy’ flavours and the sensations he felt on his first taste of marmalade on toast.” So if you’re wondering what flavors to expect from the Breakfast Martini, look forward to a tangy and bitter flavor profile. Before we go ahead and give all of the credit for the Breakfast Martini to Mr. Calabrese, we should note that the Breakfast Martini Wiki page points out that “A similar drink, the Marmalade Cocktail, was invented in the 1920s by Harry Craddock and published in his standard reference book, the Savoy Cocktail Book.” And the biggest thing that sets this Breakfast Martini apart from other martinis is that marmalade factor so…. But that doesn’t really matter, right?! What does matter is how delicious this dang marmalade cocktail is. Speaking of which, here are a couple of other delicious marmalade cocktail recipes to check out. BREAKFAST MARTINI 1 3/4 (50ml Gin 1/2 oz. (15ml Cointreau 1/2 oz.
